@ Steve Reeves: I agree, and I hope that it will help. In another part of the book I described it as follows:

"Just try to remember that similar to when you sit down at your television to watch a program, the commercials are small clips between the programs you tuned in to watch. You may also wish to consider that people pay extra to watch television with no commercials."

@ Steve Curtin: We are fortunate to understand the value proposition, and that the greatest value comes from relationships and relevance. Do you think we can prove it to others? I hope so! :-)

Mark,

Appreciated the line, "If I have value to share, do you really mind that I make you aware of it?"

I agree and would add that "value" is subjective and linked to experience with a company, brand, or person. In other words, if I didn't know Mark Murnahan (had no history, experience, or relationship), I might misinterpret your most subtle attempts to share value as being "self-promotional."

If, on the other hand, I know you through previous interactions in which we've established some rapport, then I likely trust your motives, know that what you have to offer holds value, and would not view your sharing as "self-promotional" (the pejorative).

In your case, you make yourself very available to others and, from my perspective, your attempts to share nuggets like this will be embraced as valuable as opposed to rejected as self-promotional.

Good luck with the book!

Hi Mark

advertising is cool with me provided it's in context.

Meanwhile the lack of context enables so much noise that normal people get turned off.

If your book can create and guide people toward that context it will do everybody a service.

Good luck

Here is a statement I made and sent by Twitter a moment ago. Perhaps it can be related to useful self-promotion.

"Pure altruism doesn't exist, even for Mother Theresa and Gandhi. The return is a great feeling of being helpful."

The people who come back to you and actually say "yes I referred you!" is much much smaller than those that actually do. Many times you may never know who referred you or when, but it is out there and I think much more powerful than some would believe.

Thank you Jenna. I believe it wholeheartedly, and I am thankful for it every time I count my many great blessings.

The hardest part for some people to understand this is that they only see it in a small degree. That is only because they just wish to believe it, but do not make it a part of their business culture.

"a warm referral from a friend is much more valuable than an advertisement." Indeed it is. Very well said.
